Alopecia: Which types are reversible? My personal fight with CCCA
Share
When we talk about hair loss, we rarely talk about the silent pain experienced by thousands of Black women every day. Even less do we talk about CCCA, a form of alopecia that personally affects me and has changed my life forever.
This reality is what led to crePus Infinis, my organic hair care brand. Because when doctors told me my hair loss wasn't reversible, I decided to fight back differently: with nature, science, and a love for my kinky hair.
Today, I'm sharing with you everything I've learned about the different types of alopecia – those that can be treated, and those we learn to live with.
1. What is alopecia?
Alopecia is a medical term for partial or total hair loss or hair thinning. It can affect only the scalp or the entire body. It affects both men and women, but Black women are particularly vulnerable to certain specific forms.
There are two main categories:
- Non-scarring alopecia: Hair follicles are intact, regrowth is possible.
- Scarring alopecia: Follicles are destroyed and replaced by scar tissue, loss is permanent.
2. Reversible types of alopecia
These forms of alopecia are treatable and allow for regrowth with the right care:
🟢 Alopecia Areata
- Cause: autoimmune disease
- Appearance: round, smooth patches
- Reversible: yes in most cases
- Treatment: corticosteroids, immunotherapy
🟢 Telogen Effluvium
- Cause: intense stress, childbirth, iron deficiency, emotional shock
- Appearance: diffuse shedding across the entire scalp
- Reversible: yes, once the cause is treated
- Treatment: stress management, supplements, gentle care
🟢 Traction Alopecia (very common in Black women)
- Cause: overly tight hairstyles, braids, extensions, weaves, buns
- Appearance: receding hairline and temples
- Reversible: yes if detected early — no if follicles are already destroyed
- Treatment: stopping tight hairstyles, nourishing care, scalp massage
🟢 Androgenetic Alopecia (early stage)
- Cause: hormones and genetics
- Appearance: progressive thinning
- Reversible: partially with early treatment
- Treatment: minoxidil, finasteride, PRP
🟢 Deficiency-related Alopecia
- Cause: lack of iron, zinc, vitamin D, biotin
- Reversible: yes with appropriate supplementation
3. Irreversible types of alopecia
These forms permanently destroy hair follicles. The priority becomes to stop progression and care for remaining hair.
🔴 CCCA — Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia (the one that personally affects me)
- Primarily affects Black women
- Starts at the crown of the head and spreads outwards
- Follicles are destroyed by chronic inflammation
- Not reversible — but progression can be slowed
🔴 Lichen Planopilaris (LPP)
- Autoimmune inflammatory disease
- Progressive destruction of follicles
- Treatment: anti-inflammatories to stop progression
🔴 Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia
- Progressive receding hairline
- Often affects menopausal women
- Not reversible but can be stabilized
4. My battle with CCCA
When I received my diagnosis of CCCA, I was devastated. The doctors confirmed what I feared: "It's not reversible."
But that sentence, instead of stopping me, gave me a mission.
If I couldn't get back the lost follicles, I could at least:
- Protect the still-living follicles
- Deeply nourish my scalp
- Avoid anything that aggravates inflammation
That's when I understood that conventional products—loaded with sulfates, parabens, and silicones—were my enemies. These ingredients irritate the scalp, clog follicles, and worsen inflammation.
5. Why organic, sulfate-free, paraben-free, silicone-free?
❌ Sulfates (SLS, SLES)
- Harsh detergents that strip the scalp
- Destroy the protective hydrolipidic film
- Worsen inflammation, catastrophic for CCCA
❌ Parabens
- Chemical preservatives that are endocrine disruptors
- Can worsen inflammatory scalp reactions
❌ Silicones
- Create a false impression of softness
- Clog hair follicles
- Prevent natural active ingredients from penetrating
✅ The organic ingredients I chose:
- Coconut oil — antibacterial, penetrates the hair fiber
- Cocoa butter — intense nourishment and protection
- Hibiscus — stimulates scalp circulation
- Moringa — rich in essential amino acids
- 6.How I care for my hair today
Living with CCCA has taught me gentleness and consistency. Here's my routine:
- 5-in-1 Shampoo — gentle cleansing without irritating the scalp
- Hair Mask — deep nourishment once a week
- Hydrating Serum — light daily hydration
- Treatment Oil — scalp massage to stimulate circulation
- Styling Cream — definition without weighing down hair
- Nourishing Pomade — protection and gentle hold
Scalp massage with the Treatment Oil has become my daily ritual—5 minutes every evening to stimulate circulation and nourish still-active follicles.
Conclusion
Alopecia, whatever its form, is a deeply intimate ordeal. But it is not a fatality.
If your alopecia is reversible, act early, consult a dermatologist, and adopt gentle, organic care.
If, like me, your alopecia is not reversible, know that you can slow its progression, care for your hair with love, and live fully with your hair as it is.
crePus Infinis was born from my struggle. Every product has been formulated with an intention: to protect, nourish, and celebrate our kinky hair—in all its beauty and resilience.
